The construction industry is constantly evolving, and the equipment rental industry is no exception. In recent years, we’ve seen several trends emerge that are shaping the future of construction equipment rental in Texas. Here are some of the trends we’ve found as industry experts:

The use of specific construction equipment

One of the most significant trends is the increasing demand for specialized equipment. As construction projects become more complex, contractors are increasingly looking for equipment that can be used for specific tasks.

This has led to a growing demand for equipment and specific attachments for these types of machines. Using a specific machine can help operators perform a task more effectively than using general-use equipment.

According to the Construction Equipment Association of Texas, the demand for specialized equipment in Texas is growing at a rate of 5% in 2023. This is due to the increasing complexity of construction projects and the need for equipment that can be used for specific tasks.

Specifically, there’s a growing demand for the following heavy equipment (mostly in the earth-moving category): excavators, backhoes, skid steers, boom lifts, concrete pumps, and dump trucks.

These groups of machines, together, can handle the land clearing, grounding, and clearing stages. To look no further, Texas’ upcoming Dallas-Houston bullet train is using mostly backhoes and excavators on the job site.

Green technology trend

Another trend is the growing popularity of green technology. Contractors are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their work, and they’re looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. This has led to an increase in demand for electric and hybrid equipment.

Overall, the demand for electric equipment in the construction industry is growing rapidly. This is due to several factors, including increasing environmental regulations, the rising cost of fuel, and the growing popularity of green technology.

In that regard, the state of Texas (and other states in the United States) is increasing its environmental taxes to push the use of electric equipment.

  • The rise in electric construction equipment

According to the Electric Power Research Institute, the demand for electric construction equipment is expected to grow by 25% per year through 2025.

  • Environmental taxes push

The state of Texas is increasing its environmental taxes to push the use of electric equipment.

However, electric construction and industrial equipment have only gone so far.  For example, an electric mini-excavator has a battery capable of running for about 4 hours, which might not be very convenient.

On the other side, their catalog of electric scissor lifts, electric boom lifts, and electric forklifts is growing. These machines won’t perform any earth tasks, but they can handle industrial and warehousing tasks easily while producing zero emissions keeping the environment less loud.

Delays in construction contracts

Another point to consider is the delay between contracts because of how challenging it can be to get a construction or services bid. Many construction companies request quotes weeks and even months before the job starts or before they close a contract.

According to a 2022 survey by the Associated General Contractors of America, the average time it takes for a small construction company to close a contract in Texas is 120 days (4 months).

The survey also found that the average time it takes for a medium-sized construction company to close a contract in Texas is 105 days.  These numbers are longer than the average time it takes for a large construction company to close a contract, but not by far, as the survey found 90 days (3 months) to be the average.

Lastly, small construction companies have an average of 10 contracts per year; medium-sized companies reach an average of 20.

Various factors could explain the construction contract delay. The number one is the competitive nature of the construction industry in Texas. Similarly, construction projects in Texas are becoming increasingly complex. And, lastly, there’s a national shortage of construction workers

Skyblack Rentals: all equipment in a single place

Finally, the construction industry is becoming more globalized. As more and more companies are looking to expand into new markets, they’re turning to equipment rental companies to provide them with a wide variety of equipment.

Finding an equipment provider and opening an account with the equipment provider takes a lot of consideration, so construction companies would prefer to find everything with a single company.  The latter has led to an increase in demand for equipment rental companies that have a global presence.
